Fire Consultancy: Concept and Early Design (RIBA Stages 0 to 2)

RIBA Stages 0 to 2

Designing fire protection in from day one.

Concept and Early Design Fire Consultancy

The decisions made at concept stage set the cost, programme and appearance of a building’s fire protection. ATOL Consultancy works with the architect and design team from RIBA Stages 0 to 2 so that passive fire protection is designed in, not bolted on.

What we do at this stage
We review the structural scheme, whether steel, concrete, CLT or glulam, alongside the emerging fire strategy, and identify early where fire protection will drive design decisions: exposed versus concealed steel, charring allowances on timber, compartmentation lines and the visual finish the architect wants to achieve.

Why Early Matters

Fewer redesigns, fewer surprises, design intent preserved.

The benefit to your project
When fire protection is considered late, it leads to variations, redesign, visible compromises and programme risk. Bringing ATOL in at concept stage means the fire strategy and the architecture develop together, with coherent detailing and realistic budgets from the outset.

Typical outputs
Early-stage fire protection review, options for exposed structure, budget guidance on protection systems, and a clear list of design risks to resolve before Stage 3 and 4 specification.

We support design teams in London, across the UK and internationally. Return to ATOL Consultancy services.
