The Coal Shed, Temple Quarter — Bristol

Part of the regeneration of Bristol’s Temple Quarter, the Coal Shed is a Victorian industrial building brought back into use as modern research and teaching space. A new cross-laminated timber and glulam structure was inserted into the retained masonry shell, and ATOL Construction delivered the fire protection upgrade to that structure, finished to a high specification.

Exposed engineered timber inside a heritage envelope leaves little margin for error. The protection has to reach its required rating while the timber remains the visible finish, and it has to be applied cleanly against retained historic fabric that cannot be marked or made good afterwards.

The result keeps the character of the original building and the warmth of the exposed timber intact, with the fire performance built in rather than added over the top.
