Shot Blasting and Surface Preparation
An intumescent or protective coating is only as good as the surface it is applied to. ATOL provides a full range of blasting and surface cleaning services to remove mill scale, rust, old paint, coatings and contamination from structural steel, concrete walls and soffits, brickwork, stone and other masonry, leaving a clean, sound surface ready for priming, coating or making good.
Across London, Kent and the South East we offer shot blasting, sand blasting, glass bead blasting, water blasting and laser cleaning, so we can match the method to the substrate, the coating specification and the site conditions.
Paint removal from concrete and brickwork
We strip paint, coatings, graffiti and staining from concrete walls, columns and soffits, brickwork and stone, whether you are preparing for a new fire protection coating or restoring the original finish. On listed and heritage buildings we use gentler methods such as low-pressure, fine-media or laser cleaning to protect the face of the brick and stone.
Prepared to the right standard
Steel is blast cleaned to the standard required by the coating manufacturer, typically Sa 2½ to ISO 8501-1, with a compatible primer applied promptly afterwards to prevent flash rusting, ready for our intumescent steel fire protection or cementitious fire protection.

Shot blasting
Fast, heavy-duty cleaning of structural steel and concrete, removing mill scale, corrosion, old paint and laitance and creating the surface profile coatings need to bond.
Sand blasting
Abrasive blast cleaning for steel, concrete, brickwork and stone, ideal for stripping old paint, rust and failed coatings.
Glass bead blasting
A finer, gentler finish that cleans without aggressively profiling the surface, suited to more delicate metalwork and finishes.
Water blasting
High-pressure water cleaning that strips coatings and contamination with minimal dust, useful in occupied or sensitive environments.
Laser cleaning
Precise, abrasive-free removal of rust, paint and coatings with no blast media to contain or dispose of, ideal for listed buildings, heritage fabric and areas where dust and waste must be kept to a minimum.

Shot blasting in London, Kent and the South East
We prepare new steelwork ready for off-site coating and carry out on-site blasting and cleaning on existing buildings and structures, from steel frames and concrete car parks to brick and stone facades, including refurbishment projects where old paint and coatings must be removed before new fire protection is applied. Our teams work across Central and Greater London, Kent and the wider South East, with steel prepared through our off-site coating facilities and concrete surfaces made ready for concrete fire protection upgrades.
One point of responsibility
Combining surface preparation, priming and intumescent coating under one contractor removes interfaces between trades, protects your programme and gives you a single point of responsibility for the finished fire protection.
